| | Preserving The Past: The Collection and the connections’. That’s what this collection of old songs from By Fist is about. The connections are interesting for any fan of David Wayne (RIP), because guitarist Davey Lee (ex-Davey Lee Band and Sabatage) with second guitarist Notch Vara (Ex-Seance), debuted in 1987 in Byfist with the Hour Glass Of Time EP.
Extensive touring saw Byfist acting as support for MSG, Savatage, Fates Warning, Trouble, Manowar and Metal Church. A further EP, You Should Have Known[i] followed in 1988 and the [i]Adrenalin set, produced by David Wayne of Metal Church and Joe Floyd of Warrior, in the Autumn of 1989. The David Wayne connection was strengthened when Byfist guitarists Davey Lee and Notch Vara duly joined Wayne's Reverend in 2002. Byfist entered the recording studio in the early summer of 2002 for their debut full length album. This recording would mark the entrance of new members, vocalist Ronnie Stixx and bassist Perry Aarn, both previously in the band Divine Ruins. Mike Sandoval would be enrolled on drums in September. As a new studio album Preserving The Past was being geared up for release, the band line up shifted shape once more in January 2003 with Byfist inducting Reverend and former Heir Apparent bassist Jay Wegener. In March 2003, Byfist inducted Rob Steele of the Texan outfit Bitter Harvest as their new lead vocalist.
In May 2005 when David Wayne passed away Reverend came with a press release: “When a band mate dies, the remaining members have to make a decision; continue on with the same beliefs, values, and direction, or stop playing together and pursue other projects. In our case, David left us specific instructions. The "Godfather of Metal" wanted Reverend to continue on, and we honor those wishes. Reverend these days is Davey Lee, Nacho Vara, Michael Falletta, Dave Galbert and Scott Marker. So if you are still here after the above story Byfist exist out of members from Reverend and David Wayne’s Metal Church. And that is interesting for everybody who loved all the above named bands.
The music on this album are from the era 1987 – 2000. In 2008 we can listen to the power metal from Byfist thanks to Rock It Up Records. If you like bands from the beginning of the US Power Metal, this might be a very nice collection for you. You may think at the beginning of bands like Heir Apparent, Fates Warning, Warrior, Shok Paris and of course Metal Church. If you didn’t notice it yet Byfist is a true underground Heavy Metal band. The line-up changes they had where uncountable at one moment, and they had a break between 1992 and 1999. On this collection you can hear at least four different vocalists!
But there are some great tracks on this album, which threw me back in my childhood with my pins and needles on my jean jacket with a print on the back from the very first Saxon album.
Songs like Eyes of Geneva, Eternal Damnation and especially the fast track Meltdown are bringing back childhood memories. So if you are an ’80 metal fan and you like the above mentioned bands and you are in for some nostalgia, this collection from Byfist might be a very nice album for your collection ....
