At the end of 2009 one of the most surprising records of 2009 was dropped in my mailbox; Sparrows of the Dutch band The Barstool Philosophers. I put the cd in my player and for almost 1 hour I was speechless; amazing psychedelic, progressive rock and an outstanding production. The Barstool Philosophers do remind me of Queensryche at the time of Promised Land; especially the vocals, they sound very much like Geoff Tate. No, this is not a copy of a great band but a terrific new band with a sound of their own.

Sparrows is the first album of this Dutch band. The band was formed in 2002 by Ivo Poelman (guitar) and Martin Kuipers (drums). After some changes of band members the last line up is besides the two founding members Rene Kroon (keys), Bas Hoebink (bass) and Lean Brouwers (vocals). This line up is also responsible for the debut album. All musicians have a musical history at bands like Sun Caged, Symmetry, Chance of Seasons and Isolation.

Sparrows is a concept album, the story is about a divorce; The album is very personal; it’s about the pain one of the band members got through at the time of his divorce. From the moment he and his former wife knew their marriage would end till the new start of the mainn person. The lyrics tell his thoughts and feelings during this time; goose bumps.
These lyrics combined with the psychedelic and progressive rock make the album an impressive experience; there are only highlights. This album must be heard at once. As I mentioned before Brouwers sounds like Tate; especially on Lies, this beautiful ballad has only piano and vocals and is one of the best tracks; so much emotions and great vocals. The intro of Dreamscape sounds like ‘Operation Mindscape’ and turns out to become a huge progressive rock song with great bass guitar playing. The heavy Eyes show the Heart tells the despair during the divorce; amazing performance.

Sparrows of the Dutch The Barstool Philosophers is must for all Queensryche fans and progressive rock fans. BUY THIS RECORD!!!!
