| | It’s been three years since this Dutch Vermin released their (well received) debut album. In those three years they have been busy with completing the line-up, bass player Rob de Waardt was added, and playing a lot of gigs. Nonetheless they have found the time to write new songs which resulted in the new album Define: divine.
The band has definitely grown over the years, in terms of technique and songwriting. Not that they were ever bad but the previous release had a few songs on it that couldn’t grasp my attention. The new album doesn’t have that problem. The songs fall into the category good (define ivine) or very good (I walk among you, nucleus). The label describes them as progressive death metal. I won’t go that far but it is still a fact that there are elements in their music that aren’t typical death metal. The songs are full with taste ful melodies and solo’s, great riffs (Morbid angel worship at some points) and tight drumming. Variation is present to say the least.
But then the down points. Although the songs are very good, In some songs I miss the sheer brutality, which makes death metal appealing to me. And although the sound is good it doesn’t really blows me away.
Overall, a very good release where the band can be proud off.
