M.I.C. or better Made In Chine is …made in Canada! ´Canada has a history of throwing up bands and artists that are slightly left of field. Not tied to the mainstream commercialism of America or the pop culture of the UK. They tend to bring a fresh approach to conventional music style; Yvon Serré is no exception to this. Serre's upbeat style is easily recognizable, his songs have been compared to Green Day, AC/DC, Cheap Trick just to name a few.´ Praise Yvon Serré for that…but who ís this superman from Sturgeon Falls, Ontario? And what’s behind him?

This album of Canadian veteran Yvon Serré reaches me after a good battering by the mailman, for the album cover crumbles out of my hands. His songs are classified as "feel-good, pick-me-up rock"! And I must say, they produce a feel-good mood indeed! But be that as it may, why am I getting this album from 2008 while M.I.C. has a whole new line up and a new album out in 2010? He also seems to be a respective member in the Chinese city of Chengdu. To promote the city of Chengdu, a concert in ”Dujiangyan” was televised across China in Septembre 2007. Since then, Yvon has been touring extensively in China with his band M.I.C. In western Europe and the US he is not familiar and probably never will be. Perhaps that’s why I’m standing here with this somewhat old material.

For one thing, Yvon Serré shouldn’t be singing at all because he can’t hold the line. For instance Can’t Let Go is too high for his vocal reach and he sounds fragile too. The provocative refrain of Everything You Do really does it, is this seriously recorded I wonder? The tough rock sound of the guitars and use of different instruments like piano/keys, sax and trumpet make up for some part, but not all. The rhythm section has difficulties to keep the pace during the not-so-difficult rhythm. The repetitive Give Me Cash (it goes on and on) sound very fresh however, especially the sax (Melissa Carole) and trumpet (Philip Fernandez)!
Why this guy is popular in China and Canada? Shoot me! I just hope that China doesn’t think that this is your average rock/metal in the US, Canada or anywhere else, because if that is the case they won’t think very highly of our musical skills.
