Steve Hacket has a huge number of releases as guitar player of Genesis as well as solo. As solo musician he released more than 20 albums during the period 1975 till now. Out Of The Tunnel’s Mouth is the latest release of this British guitar hero.

Steve Hackett (vocals, guitars, lyrics) has collected a lot of musicians for the album. On bass Nick Beggs and Chris Squire, on drums Dick Driver, vocals Amanda Lehmann, Jo Lehmann and Laura King. Roger King on keyboard, Anthony Phillips on 12 string guitar. The other instruments (violin, sax and flute) are performed by Ferenc, Christine Townsend, Rob Townsend and John Hackett.

Considering the line up it is clear the music is mainly oriented on world and symphonic music. The exception is the instrumental track Tubehead; this song is heavy and up tempo.
Out Of The Tunnel’s Mouth is a mix of symphonic rock varied with quiet en heavy parts; it has a depressive atmosphere. During the heavy parts the bass guitar playing is amazing; the solo is rather psychedelic. Nomads is another song, it has gypsy influences; the mix of the gypsy influences and the lyrics is great (the threats of live of the nomads). The second part is up tempo with a violin solo followed by a solo of Steve. Goosebumps. Last Train To Istanbul is comparable with Nomads; the song has Asian influences all over.
Emerald And Ash has a quiet first part with acoustic guitar; subtle drumming; great bass playing and symphonic influences. The second part is instrumental with varied solos; the guitar solo is more powerful with a rather aggressive with some weird sounds in it. The ending takes almost 1 minute; too long. The heavy and terrific Tubehead is a welcome variety of the quiet parts.
Sleepers starts as the title suggests; acoustic and violins. It sounds like a soundtrack of a movie at a depressive moment. The second part bursts out of your speakers; the drums and bass are overwhelming with an impressive guitar solo. Just like Emerald And Ash this song has also an end that is far too long.

The second instrumental part of the album Ghost In The Glass starts acoustic but becomes a slow tempo track with beautiful melodies and solo’s. The bluesy Still Waters is performed great; terrific solo’s and a gospel choir. The end is fading away; why this song and why during this solo????

Out Of The Tunnel’s Mouth is an album with many influences; Steve Hackett did it again. Steve Hackett made an impressive album with a lot of musicians. Highly recommended for prog rock fans and symph rock fans.
