When the first song 220 kicks in my first thought is: Yeah, that’s it. Fucking Thrash the way it must be played. A bunch of catchy riffs, pounding drums, a few guitarsolo’s and a good production to back it up. Musically a mix of old Razor, old The Haunted and on top of that some bay-area influences.
The second track Freddy’s Song starts promising with singer Tjerk screaming out his lungs the way it should be but what the fuck happens in the chorus, an almost happy sounding melodic part with, you guessed by now, clean fucking vocals. This reduces the quality of the song and with the third track Hollow (same recipe) I’m losing hope on a recovery for Outburst. The Beast Will Strike Again is a much better track with nice breaks and Tjerk using his voice much better. The intermezzo What The Eyes See introduces the best song of the album, Slaughterhouse. A great bay-area track Exodus style with vocally Tjerk’s best performance. I would almost forget to mention the other musicians but don’t sweat because they can execute a thrash song in a perfect way.
After this onslaught it’s good thrashing with From Hell and The End but on My Own Hell and Attack Of The Overfiend the crappy clean vocals make a short return.
Outburst is one of the few Dutch thrash bands that can gather international fame but they have to ditch the clean vocals. I keep my hopes on an eventual follow up but don’t let this fool you right now because there is enough on Fair And Balanced to enjoy and have a good thrashparty.
