| | Lots of bands who claim to play progressive metal are actually playing metal in the genre of bands who were progressive a long time ago. The only reason they get labelled as progressive is because their sound is similar to bands who once were progressive, like Opeth. But when I say the Norwegian band In Vain plays progressive death/black metal, I really mean that they have created a new and original sound. In Vain was formed in 2003 and The Latter Rain is their fist full-length album. In the past they already released the EP Will The Sun Ever Rise? in 2004 and the EP Wounds in 2005. The Latter Rain is an album that sounds like the band went over each little detail. Everything is right in its place. In Vain created one of the best debut metal albums and one of the best albums of 2007 so far.
The tempo on this record is not very constant. There are long epic areas with clean vocals which are very slow like a big part of Their Spirits Ride With The Wind. On the other hand there are also very hard, aggressive and fast songs like Det Rakner!. This aggressive song with a deep grunt, double-bass drumming and screaming guitars is followed by an easy part with melodic folky singing that reminds me of the newer work of the Norwegian Viking metalband Borknagar.
Over twenty guest musicians helped In Vain recording this album, including Jan K. Transeth of the Norwegian avantgarde metalband In The Woods and Kjetil Nordhus of the Norwegian gothic metalacts Green Carnation and Trail Of Tears. The record even includes a saxophone and a cello, which are both not very usual to use in extreme metalrecords of course. All music has been written by guitarist J. Haaland, which makes him a musical mastermind. The Latter Rain is top 10 of the year material in a year full of good releases.
