It’s 2007 and Danish black metal band Angantyr and Swedish band Nasheim decided to cross their swords into a split album. Although Angantyr exist already since 1997 and has three full-lenght albums on their name, this is my first aquaintance with this band. Nasheim is a little younger (formed in 2001) and only recorded two demo’s till now (both demo’s are put together, filled up with a cover of the band Bathory), so I was not familiar with this band also. A reason for me to find this release an interesting one.

The split starts with three songs of Angantyr. Like said is Angantyr a Danish black metal band, formed in 1997. The biography tells us that Angantyr started out as a synth/ambient project, but quickly changes into a raw black metal band, and I think this was a right decision. Looking further to the band I notice that this is a one-man project by Ynleborgaz and that he knows what to do with his time. The man got this year, besides this split, four releaseson his name. Three full-lenght albums with black metal band Holmgang and with black metal/ambient project Make a Change... Kill Yourself and Angantyr itself (“Hævn”), and a EP with pagan black metal band Vardlokkur. Another nice thing to know is that Angantyr was a Danish king in the 8th century.

The first song of the three is grims Hævn uptempo black metal song, which has a dark atmosphere, created by the subtile melody in the guitarriff. Next its Edsvoren, which is more of a cold mid-tempo song. The last of this three songs is a live version of I Der Knæler I Ynk (from the first full-length Kampen Fortsætter), recorded during one of the five concerts played in 2007 (too bad that this live-lineup has dissolved and Angantyr doesn’t play live anymore). Although this is for black metal standards a recording with a decent sound, and a good song in itself. I maybe rather had seen a third new song. But looking at the things this man did this year, he is more than forgiven.

The second band on this split is Nasheim. This band does it a little different from Angantyr. The one song on this split called Sövande Mjöd Vill Jag Tömma. This is a epic song of 25 minutes. It starts acoustic and has a touch of folk in it. After two minutes, you’ll be hit in the face by fast and raw black metal. Then the song goes back in a long drawn out piece of black metal. The moment you be dragged away in this melancholic atmosphere, fast and raw music again kicks in. This changes keep this song interesting. I wonder when Nasheim comes up with their first full-length album, because this song made me a little curious for more.

This is a split with two bands which fits well together and that’s what makes this recording interesting.
