| | The Greek black metal duo Necromantia, found its origin already back in 1989. This band consist of Magus Wampyr Daoloth (vocals, bass) and Baron Blood (aka Makis) (8-string bass). This new full-lenght album is number four in 18 years of excistence, besides a number of split-albums, EP’s, demo’s and compilations.
When I think of black metal (or extreme metal in generaly) from Greece, I always think of Rotting Christ and Septic Flesh. And although these are two different band, I hear a certain similarity between those band (and some other from this country). When I listened to The Sounds of Lucifer Storming Heaven, I noticed that I couldn’t find those similarities with these bands. By the use of only bass guitars, Necromantia has quite a face of its own. Instead of guitars, they make use of a 8 string bass guitar. Mostly this can match with a guitar, but gives at some moments just that extra, different of strange/weird touch to the music.
Further is the prominent use of melodic and symphonic orchestral parts in the music. And there we come to one of my points of critisism. I think that these orchestra/keyboard part take a too prominent part in the whole of this album, more is not always better in this case. A compliment has to go to the vocals, clean as also the screams sounds very good. Another point of critism is the production. Not that this is bad, on the contrary. But with a production that is a little more full and richer of sound, this kind of music comes a little better to its right
I can recommend this album to people who like their black metal with moments symphonic and bombastic, and who can appreciate a little experimental .
