| On this last day in september it’s a perfect time to say goodbye to the summer and welcome the more colder days with an underground festival. Located of course in the Dutch city of Tilburg the Headbanger Fest is held in a small bar where a nice and warm atmosphere welcomes the metalfan.
Unfortunately arriving too late to check out the first three bands we step in just in time to see Methusalem kick off their set. With an acceptable soundmix we hear the true metal pounding our eardrums. Most remarkable bandmember is the singer who has a voice similar to Rob Halford 25 years ago. What a screamer!!! Perfect vocals to support the heavy metal from Methusalem. Too bad the singer already left this Dutch band but this afternoon he gets the crowd wild and Methusalem get the job done. Good gig and hopefully they manage to replace the singer with an equal screamer.
Many people around the Tilburg area were familiar with the next band Red Dragon. This band from Tilburg existed some 25 years ago and besides some demo’s Red Dragon never recorded professionally. With family members of all ages in the audience and with the frontrow full of bangers it’s an easy victory for Red Dragon. I’ve seen them 25 years ago and I must say they can still do the trick. Sometimes a little rusty but what the hell, most of the time they still delivered the good old Dutch metal similar to bands like Picture or Bodine. The band is enjoying themselfs and so is the crowd and after more than an hour it’s time to say goodbye, once again, to this underground Dutch band. Maybe we gonna hear more of them, we just have to wait and see.
After the dinerbreak it was time to prepare for, again, an old name from the history of Dutch heavy metal. Martyr is the name of the band and they perform for a few years now after their reunion. I already saw them a few times on some German festivals and I have to say, everytime they know how to deliver a good show. On this Headbangers Fest it’s no suprise they succeed easily. The band plays well, is enthusiastic as hell and their crazy singer is making a fool of himself but nevertheless maintains to keep his voice in shape. Great performance and if this band plays in your neighbourhood go check them out.
Then came true metal band Mystery Blue hailing from France. Strange enough there weren’t many people that knew the band but after a few songs there was more movement from the headbangers. Mystery Blue plays metal in the vein of Halford/Priest with a central role for leadsinger Nathalie Geyer. This lady has an opera like voice with incredible screams and yells. The band keeps coming up with much up-tempo songs from the last two albums. Angel, Slave To Blood, Psycho City, Claws Of Steel and the entirely sung in Spanish track Fuego, just to name a few. After an explosive hour we can prepare ourselves for the headliner Pentacle, the Dutch Celtic Frost. With an existence for over a decade the band knows how to play and work the crowd. Most important ingredient is of course the music and this band has more than a few good songs and the audience is well into the show. Strong and energetic performance from Pentacle and a terrific way to close this years edition of the Tilburg Headbangers Fest. A well organized event and hopefully they can come up with another strong line-up next year.
